African Brand Leadership Merit Awards

Recognising excellence in African brand building across 35 categories.

Overview

The future of African brands is the future of business in Africa. It is about sustainable wealth creation.

Because of how brands interact with the business sector, the future of brands in Africa is also inextricably linked to the future of society.

African Brands Congress 2026 will hold this year's edition of the African Brand Leadership Merit Awards, celebrating leadership, innovation and creativity in Africa. The awards showcase the minds and institutions delivering positive change and shaping Africa's future. They will honour CEOs, businesses, brands, products and services, as well as public officers, who have excelled and shown uncommon initiative, drive and leadership in Africa's economy.

Winners will have made an outstanding contribution to the development of the continent and the economic aspirations of its citizens, and to the transformation of Africa's image in international markets, while displaying high standards of good corporate citizenship and social and environmental responsibility.

How selection works and how to enter

How selection works

  1. Award Technical Committee A team of brand experts, researchers and journalists determines which brands, individuals and companies deserve the awards.
  2. Consumer survey An annual survey finds which brands appeal most to African consumers. Data is collected through face-to-face interviews using a structured questionnaire and stratified multi-stage random sampling. Questions are interpreted in different languages so respondents across Africa are represented.
  3. Categories of brands Participants name the best brands for several categories of products, companies and daily necessities.
  4. Criteria The research takes into account qualitative and quantitative criteria. The five qualitative criteria are quality, value, trustworthiness, strong image and understanding consumer needs.
  5. Nominees Brands from indigenous and multinational firms operating in Africa are nominated.
